FAQs
Is my story interesting enough?
Many so-called ordinary people have good stories to tell. If you want to put your story on record - or just one part of your life - then it’s interesting enough.
Who owns the copyright?
You will receive confirmation in writing that you own the copyright
Can I sell my book?
Memoirs are an important treasure to family and friends but can also be fascinating for a wider audience. I will put your book on my website and pass on sales inquiries. You receive all the money. I will try to get publicity for your book in local papers and magazines. I will recommend independent bookshops which might stock your book on sale or return. Clients are also amazed at how word of mouth brings inquiries from far and wide. Libraries are often anxious to have copies and some museums will sell them through their shops. I can advise on all this. You’re unlikely to make a fortune but it will be satisfying and fun.
Do I need an ISBN number? How do I get one?
If you want to sell through major bookshops you will need to buy an ISBN number. You’ll need to tell me before I design the book. I Charge £25 and I can arrange it all for you.
I don’t need 50 books
My memoir service produces high quality books at a very good price. You can have both colour and black and white photos throughout on excellent paper with a strong binding. The boards which surround the hardback are substantial and carry the title and author on the spine. The dust jacket is in full colour. The inside of the paperbacks is exactly the same high quality, with a strong full colour cover.
You don’t have to have 50 copies but the price remains the same. In my experience, clients usually find that by the time they have distributed copies to family and friends, and then responded to the unexpected requests which result from word of mouth, 50 doesn’t seem as many as they thought. Libraries and museums often ask for copies and local independent bookshops usually like to sell them.
But aren’t there printers who will do just one copy?
Yes, but I haven’t found anyone to make books of this quality including colour photos. I want you to have a book that lasts.
Can I have a bigger book?
Yes – more words, more pictures, bigger format. I can get you a quote.
Can I get more copies printed later?
Yes. I will keep a digital copy of your book on file indefinitely. You can also have this file on disk if you wish.
Will you take care of my photos?
I’ll scan them at your home so they don’t leave your possession.
How long will it take?
Once we have completed the interviews, you will receive a first proof of the words within 3 weeks. After you return the proof, I will design the book within 3 weeks and send another proof. When you’re happy with the proofs, they can go to the printer, who delivers in about 5 weeks.
I’ve already written my story – can you make it into a book?
Yes. I will design your book and cover for you and get you a quote for printing. But I don’t do re-writes or extra research.
Cost: £600 for up to 120 pages and cover.
